Alcohol, Drugs, and Tobacco
The Tooele County School District prohibits the use, possession, distribution, sale, or being under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, imitation controlled substances, and other harmful substances. This policy applies during school hours, before and after school while on school property, at all approved events, and when actions affect the operation of Tooele Public Schools.
Prescribed medications must be administered according to school policy. Violations will be reported to parents, receive school action, and may be referred to law enforcement.
Bomb Threats and False Fire Alarms
Bomb threats and false fire alarms disrupt school and endanger everyone. These constitute felony offenses and will be addressed severely. Old Mill Elementary has a zero-tolerance policy for such actions, leading to potential suspension and law enforcement involvement.
Bullying
- Definition: Bullying is any act that endangers the physical health or safety of a student or staff member. This includes physical harm, harassment, and cyber-bullying.
- Prevention: Teachers will educate students on bullying definitions using strategies like:
- Second Steps Curriculum
- Group Discussion
- Role Playing
- Interactive Writing
- Think / Pair / Share
- Class Meetings
- Intervention: Students should report bullying to school personnel or parents. First-time offenders will have parents notified, and further actions will be taken for persistent bullying.
Criminal Trespass
Under Utah Law, entering school property without authorization is a misdemeanor. Trespassers will be instructed to leave, and non-compliance may lead to law enforcement involvement.
Destruction of School Property
Students must respect school property. Vandalism or carelessness will result in financial responsibility for repairs. Community service may also be required.
Fighting
Students must learn to resolve conflicts peacefully. Those who engage in fighting may face suspension or juvenile court referrals.
Gangs
Gang activities and apparel are prohibited. Students involved may be suspended or expelled according to district guidelines.
Gum
Gum chewing is not allowed at school due to the potential for damage.
Obscenity, Pornography, Profanity, and Vulgarity
All forms of abusive language and gestures are prohibited. Students engaging in such behavior will face disciplinary action.
Safe and Drug-Free Schools
Tooele County School District prioritizes safety and requires all students and parents to acknowledge receipt of the “Safe School Conduct and Discipline Policy.”
Search and Seizure
School officials may search students or their belongings if there is reasonable suspicion of danger. Desks are school property and subject to inspection.
Standards of Conduct
School discipline aims to maintain a safe environment. Students disrupting education or harassing others will face corrective action. Old Mill Elementary uses THINK TIME for disruptive behaviors, emphasizing responsibility and respect.
Technology Usage and Fraud
Technology must be used according to the “Use Agreement” in this handbook. Violations may result in loss of privileges and financial responsibility for damages.
Theft
Students must respect personal and school property. Theft will lead to parental notification, school action, and possible law enforcement involvement.
Toys
Toys are not allowed at school to prevent distractions. Items deemed dangerous will be confiscated.
Weapon Control
Possession of firearms or potentially dangerous objects is prohibited and will be confiscated.
